Celebration of The Goddess of the Sea in Rio de Janeiro
Iemanjá's devotee carries image of the saint to the religious celebration in the sands of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on December 29, 2016. Devotees of umbanda and candomblé celebrate Iemanjá, Orixá known as Queen of the Sea. In the tradition of Brazilian religions, of African hue, devotees make offerings to ask for a prosperous new year. The Iemanjá party held by Mercadão de Madureira takes an image of approximately 2 meters high through the streets of the city in open car. The image leaves the Mercadão of Madureira and goes until Copacabana, where there are a series of religious celebrations of Umbanda and Candomblé. The Mercadão de Madureira is a popular market that sells religious articles, food and holiday items. The place is a Cultural Patrimony Carioca.
