Protest in Athens in support of refugees
Protest in Athens on February 3, 2017 against the Greek migrant camps conditions, following the death of five migrants this winter. European Union leaders agreed a plan to curb mass migration from Libya at a special summit in Malta on February 3, 2017 that was overshadowed by the challenges of Donald Trump and Brexit. Greece has over 60,000 refugees and migrants on its soil, the result of a series of border closures in the Balkans and eastern Europe last year. Many of the camps are overcrowded, especially on the islands facing Turkey. On Lesbos there are nearly 5,000 people in camps nominally built to hold 3,500, according to government figures.
