Government Programs of Waste Management in Indonesia

A worker prepares the Dry Waste Gasification Power Plant machine. Dry Waste Gasification Power Plant uses branches and plastics waste to produce electricity. Gasification is solid waste burning process in gasification reactor and converted into methane gas. Filtered by water scrubber and then accommodated in a carbon filter and flowing through a pipeline gas to a generator. The methane gas will be mixed with diesel fuel to turn on the generator. With a mix of methane gas, we can save the use of diesel fuel. Electrical energy produced by the generator will be stored in battery. When electricity is needed, we can simply turn on the switch that is connected to the battery. A gasification machine with the capacity of 80 kg, can produce 4,000 watts of electricity, enough to light some households. But now, only powering compost house and lights park near the gasification reactor. Surabaya Municipality Government has developed an effective community education program about waste management start from household to sort between organic and non-organic waste. The programs included Surabaya Green and Clean, Bank Sampah, Compost House, Dry Waste Gasification Power Plant. (Photo by Robertus Pudyanto/NurPhoto)
