India Daily Life
Kolkata Daily Life,Vegetables laid out for sale at a market in south Kolkata. Kolkata is India's oldest port city. It is a place of sharp contrasts. Though the city is known for its intense poverty, it is also known as a thriving cultural and economic hub. Much of Kolkata's architecture is colonial in style reflecting the importance of the city to the British Raj of which it was the capital until 1911. Today Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and is India's third largest city after Mumbai and Delhi. Ruled for decades by a the communist party of India led by Jyoti Basu, Kolkata appears is very much a city of faded glory and one in which the demands of a booming population have far outstretched the means of the city to serve them - leaving legions of people sleeping outside in the street, eking out a living as best they can.
