The Kolkata Port Trust plans to monetise 112 acres of prime land in the city to reduce its pension liabilities. Around ₹1,000 crore is expected from the deal. The port trust currently makes an annual payout of ₹300 crore for its 30,000 pensioners. It also has 5,300 employees on the pay roll. Babu voiced concern over the deep draft Subarnarekha port in Balasore district of Odisha and the proposed Tajpur port (Purba Medinipur district) in West Bengal posing challenges to the Haldia port. According to him, the Tajpur port can take away 40 per cent of Haldia's cargo, while the Dhamra port can take away 10-15 per cent of Haldia’s container cargo in the long run. Subarnarekha is likely to be a short-term competitor. (Photo by Debajyoti Chakraborty/NurPhoto)
