Leo Varadkar on his way to becoming Ireland's first gay Taoiseach
Leo Varadkar on his way to the Mansion House in Dublin, where he was elected the new leader of Fine Gael and on course to become Ireland’s first gay Taoiseach. Following the formation of a Fine Gael minority government in May 2016, Leo Varadkar was appointed Minister for Social Protection. After the resignation of Enda Kenny as Leader of Fine Gael in May 2017, Varadkar announced his candidacy for party leader. He faced Minister for Housing Simon Coveney in the Fine Gael leadership election. Today, on 2nd of June 2017, it was announced that Varadkar had been elected Leader of Fine Gael, winning 51 of the 73 votes in the parliamentary party. Ireland's likely next Taoiseach (Prime Minister) is not expected to be formally confirmed until June 13 when the Dail (Irish parliament) resumes following a week long break.
