Eutrophication of the Garonne river in France

Two men practice canoe in the eutrophicated Garonne river. Due to warm weather, low waters and intensive use of fertilizers (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) by farmers, the Garonne river is victim of eutrophication. Green algae and plants blossom in the river bed. It disrupts normal functioning of the ecosystem, causing a variety of problems such as a lack of oxygen needed for fish and shellfish to survive. It can also reduce biodiversity in the river. Toulouse. France. June 27th 2017. (Photo by Alain Pitton/NurPhoto)
