Ship Breaking Industry In Indonesia
Workers destroyed the vessel to recycle precious steel in the yard of the ship in Cilincing on September 3, 2017 in Cilincing, Jakarta, Indonesia. The ships are driven to the 10 km coastal line here at high tide, where dismantling begins at a cost usually no more than USD5 per day for workers. Most of the vessels will survive for decades before being repaired to be uneconomical, so instead broken down and steel is recycled. Sailing is most often done in developing countries, where the health risks of potentially hazardous materials as well as environmental problems associated with dismantling are largely uncontrolled. Demand from developed countries has seen a recent rise in steel prices. Edi Ismail (Photo by Edi Ismail/NurPhoto)
