Toppled water tower in downtown Kilinochchi

Toppled water tower in downtown Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The water tower was bombed by the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) in the final stages of the long Sri Lankan Civil War in the year 2008. The town of Kilinochchi was once the Tamil Tigers administrative center and was destroyed to cripple the town before it fell to the Sri Lankan Army during the Battle of Kilinochchi. The size of the fallen tower is daunting, especially so because it now lies on the ground, dwarfing the nearby buildings and is just one of the many reminders of the deep scars caused as a result of 26-year long civil war between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). The United Nations estimates about 40,000 people were killed during the war. (Photo by Creative Touch Imaging Ltd./NurPhoto)
