Anies Baswedan, New Governor of Jakarta
The Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan and Deputy Governor, Sandiaga Uno, were paraded from the Presidential Palace to the City Hall during the inauguration ceremony in Jakarta, Indonesia, on October 16, 2017. Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno pair won the Jakarta gubernatorial election on April 2017, in which they defeated former governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) and his running mate Djarot Saiful Hidayat. It was the hottest election in the history of Indonesian politics and a controversial competition - which led to a two-years prison sentence for Ahok on blasphemy against Islam - fueled by ethnic and religious tensions.
