Rural carnival of the 'Zako Zahar' in Lesaka

Two participants in the rural carnival of Lesaka (Navarra) await with their "Zaka-Zahar" costumes made from sacks filled with dry grass, waiting to go out to tour the streets of the town in Lesaka, Navarra, Spain, on 11 February 2018. The "zako-zahar" are typical characters of the rural carnival of Lesaka (Navarra), stuffed in straw-filled sacks with their faces covered by white handkerchiefs, which carry inflated bladders to beat the people who walk the streets of the village at dusk. When they get tired, they sit on the floor one on top of the other to rest and have fun. This is one of the ancestral carnivals whose origin is confused and combines ancient pagan beliefs and which are very popular in the northern part of Spain.
