Media freedom group holds action in solidarity for Jailed Turkish Journalists
Media freedom group AEJ-Bulgaria holds action in solidarity with media professionals detained by the government of Erdogan, demanding their immediate release in Varna, Bulgaria on March 26, 2018. The Association of European Journalists - Bulgaria (AEJ-Bulgaria) issued symbolic accreditation badges for the EU-Turkey Leader’s Meeting, some of them they put on symbolic places around the city of Varna, Bulgaria, set for March 26 for 95 Turkish journalists. The importance of the informal summit, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to meet the Presidents of the Council and the Commission Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker and the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Boyko Borissov, is significant. Unfortunately, these 95 Turkish colleagues will not be able to attend the meeting and to do their job to ask questions and to hold the politicians accountable for their commitments, because they have been put behind bars. Our message to politicians is clear: Journalists are not terrorists and cannot be treated as such for their work. Even if you put critical journalists in jail, you will not stop hearing them - others will raise their voices. We will speak with their voice, the AEJ-Bulgaria. The EU-Turkey leaders' meeting take place today on 26 March at the Evksinograd residence in Varna, Bulgaria. It will bring together Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, Boyko Borissov, Prime Minister of Bulgaria, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey. This working dinner will be an occasion to assess matters of mutual interest and recent developments in Turkey, including the country’s illegal actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea and its involvement in Syria. At their last EU summit on 22-23 March, EU leaders called on Turkey to respect Cyprus' sovereign rights to explore and exploit its natural resources, in line with EU and international law.
