"Vloggeln" the traditional Easter procession in Ootmarsum, Netherlands
April 1st, Ootmarsum. The poaskearls (Easter-men in a Dutch dialect) are young Catholic single men from Ootmarsum and they perform a yearly traditional event around Easter called 'vlöggeln' while singing ancient medieval hymns. The oldest of the eight men is traditionally smoking a sigar and as owner of the finance he's nicknamed Judas. Every year, two new poaskearls are chosen and replace the two oldest. They meander through the streets, tapping on the fundaments of old farms and pass by several cafés. Poaskearls are single, Roman Catholic young men born in Ootmarsum who wear long, beige coloured raincoats, black trousers and a hat. Participants from Ootmarsum walk hand in hand through the streets of the small town, singing religious hymns and lift children into the air at the end of the procession symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
