Polar vortex: Temperatures plunge in New York City

A blast of record-breaking arctic air hit the United States on Tuesday, 7 January, 2014, causing at least 17 deaths and widespread transportation delays. All 50 U.S. states recorded temperatures below freezing. New York City's Central Park recorded its lowest temperature for 7 January, -15.5 degrees Celsius (4 degrees Fahrenheit) in 118 years.
