Kashmir Horseshoe Makers
Kashmiri Muslim farriers fit a horseshoe in to a horse in a market on July 16, 2018 in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. A special genera of Iron smiths is into making of horseshoe called Nalbands in Kashmir. These in the past worked for Calvary of Maharajas (great rulers) military besides making shoes for transporters using horses. However with the advent of modern transportation their use and manufacture has dwindled considerably. A horseshoe is a fabricated product, made of metal, designed to protect a horse's hoof from wear. Shoes are attached on the palmar surface (ground side) of the hooves, usually nailed through the insensitive hoof wall that is anatomically akin to the human toenail. The fitting of horseshoes is a professional occupation, conducted by a farrier, who specializes in the preparation of feet, assessing potential lameness issues, and fitting appropriate shoes, including remedial features where required.
