Code Rood Action Against The Fossil Fuel Industry In Groningen

The movement 'Code Rood' organized a civil disobedience action against the NAM oil company collective incorporating Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Exxon Mobil Corp on August 28th in Groningen, Netherlands. As earthquakes become more intense and more frequent in the north of the Netherlands, there is mounting pressure on the government to reduce the amount of gas being extracted there. With this action, Code Rood is demanding compensation for damages and the end of the gas extraction in Groningen. Groningen gas was discovered in the 1960s. Since then, the Dutch government has reaped an estimated 250bn euros from the sale of this natural resource. The Groningen Ground Movement is currently considering taking its case to the European Court of Human Rights, on the grounds their basic right to live without fear is being violated. More than 400 activists from different countries sat in front of the NAM location in Farmsum to block the oil company. (Photo by Romy Arroyo Fernandez/NurPhoto)
