The city dates back in the Stone Age as there are archaeological evidences but around 650 two abbeys where founded from Saint Amand. In the 13th century Ghent was the 2nd largest city in Northern Europe. Nowadays the population of the city slightly exceed 250.000 people but there are annually millions of visitors.
