Me-Dam-Me-Phi Festival In Assam

Tai Ahom community people offers food to ancestors during the rituals and traditions of the festival Me-Dam-Me Phi at Notboma, in Guwahati, Assam, India on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. The Ahom community observed Me-Dam-Me-Phi, one of their most sacred rituals, across the State today. Members of the community offered prayers in memory of their forefathers with traditional fanfare. Functions were held across the State to celebrate the occasion and people from other communities too participated in the celebrations with equal enthusiasm. The word ‘Me’ means offering, ‘Dam’ means ancestors and ‘Phi’ means Gods. So the word ‘Me-Dam-Me-Phi’ means oblations offered to the dead and sacrifices to Gods. (Photo by David Talukdar/NurPhoto)
