Closed-Down Shops In Central London Tell Of UK Retail Gloom
Shoppers walk past a closed-down store on Oxford Street in London, England, on February 2, 2019. Real estate consultancy the Altus Group warned last month that it expected more than 23,000 shops to close in the UK in 2019, suggesting an even worse year for Britain's struggling high streets than 2018. Last year was one of crisis for British retailers, hit by low consumer confidence, rising rates and the challenge of online giants such as Amazon offering lower prices and reducing footfall.
