Turkish Shoppers Wait In Long Lines For Discount Food
On 13 February 2019, Turkish shoppers waited in long lines to buy discount vegetables from government-run food distribution tents in Sihhiye, Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. In response to sharp increases in food prices after months of high inflation rates and economic troubles, the Turkish government opened discount street markets in February 2019 to sell vegetables directly to consumers and reduce prices of basic food staples such as onions, potatoes and tomatoes. The wholesale food program has been seen as a sign of Turkey's ailing economy. (Photo by Diego Cupolo/NurPhoto)
