Blessing of waters celebrated in Thessaloniki
Swimmers catch the cross during the Epiphany day. Epiphany is a large annual Christian celebration of remembrance of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. It is celebrated on January 6. The name arises from the manifestation of all three persons of the Trinity. The principal ceremonies of Epiphany are the Great Blessing of waters that takes place within the Church and the Diving of the Holy Cross in the sea. The recovery of the Cross is made by swimmers.
