Women’s Carnival Day In Dusseldorf
February 28th, Dusseldorf. On the first day of the carnival or Altweiberfastnacht, the women (called Möhnen) storm the City Council Offices to capture the Lord Mayor and take over the administration of the City for the night and that is the official opening of the street carnival in the old city of Düsseldorf. In Rhineland on this day, the ladies cut the ties of the men, it does not matter if they are in a position of importance or his age. Everybody around the old town are wearing costumes, dancing and drinking into the next day. (Photo by Romy Arroyo Fernandez/NurPhoto)
