Cows Going Outside For The First Time This Year

April 7th, Volkel. Each year farms throughout the Netherlands pick a date to let their cows out into the pastures and announce it to the public via websites etc. Due to the freezing temperatures in the Netherlands, the dairy cows are brought inside for the winter months. So, on this special day, typically on a weekend in April, the barn doors are opened and the cows sprint out towards the green pastures. The public can watch the cows literally jumping for joy as they reach the green grass under their hooves. In Dutch, this is also known as the ‘koeiendans’ which is the frolic jumping, twirling and running of cows let out in the meadows for the first time in spring.
