Large-scale Port Protection Exercise In Rotterdam
The port of Rotterdam forms scene of a major harbor protection exercise. During the Port Defender Rotterdam exercise, the Royal Netherlands Navy, Royal Netherlands Air Force, Special Intervention Service (DSI), the Coast Guard, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Rotterdam Police Unit and the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Security Region train together, so that a major (public order) incident or acute terrorism threat can be dealt with quickly and adequately. In various challenging scenarios, the port of Rotterdam is faced with an increased threat. While special units of the Marine Corps and the police have to free a ship hijacked by terrorists, marine divers, pilots and soldiers from the maritime explosives disposal service each face their own challenges. Port protection The ultimate goal is to practice jointly with all different security and relief organizations in the field of port protection. Port Defender is being held for the fourth time. By integrating different threat scenarios with each other, an exercise that is as realistic as possible is created and the participants get the opportunity to practice mutual cooperation in addition to their own skills. The navy carries out several port protection exercises every year. (Photo by Goncalo Silva/NurPhoto)
