First Skyscraper In Latin America Will Be Auctioned By Brazilian Government
First skyscraper in Latin America, the building The Night - Joseph Gire, will be auctioned by the Brazilian Government soon. The 22-storey, 102-meter-high building was inaugurated in 1929 and by the time it was built, it became the tallest building in the world built of reinforced concrete. The project is by the French architect Joseph Gire, the same architect responsible for the Copacabana Palace. The building had rare items for the time, like elevators and had art-deco architecture. The site has been abandoned for years, presenting serious structural problems, requiring the new owners to make a complete retrofit to make the site safe and suitable for the new use needs of the building. The initial value of the auction has not yet been defined. (Photo by Luiz Souza/NurPhoto)
