Environmental Issue Protest In Jakarta

A number of environmental activists held a protest to rejecting an illegal household plastic waste from US in front of US embassy, Jakarta, on Friday, July 19, 2019. Environmental activists urged the US government as the largest exporter of paper waste in Indonesia, to stop the smuggling of household plastic waste mixed into paper waste into Indonesia, which is suspected to be the cause of environmental problems, including microplastic pollution in rivers in the East Java province. For information, during 2018, Indonesia imported 738,655 tons of American paper waste as raw material for paper production, this number increased 35% from 2017 amounting to 546,690 tons, which was allegedly due to the termination of imports of garbage from America by China. And from the amount of imports of Indonesian paper waste, the type of Unsorted Scrap Paper (HS CODE 47079000) is as much as 30% mixed with household plastic waste. (Photo by Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto)
