Papuans Commemorating The 56th New York Agreement

Dozens of students and Papuans, who are members of the Papuan Student Alliance and the Indonesian People's Front for West Papua, demonstrated in front of the American Embassy in Jakarta to commemorate the 56th anniversary of the New York Agreement, on Thursday, August 15, 2019. In the demonstration, they mentioned the agreement was illegal because it was only between the United States, Indonesia and the Netherlands, and did not involve representatives of the people of West Papua. Therefore, they demand that the United States be held responsible, for what they call colonialism, by the Indonesian government that occupied West Papua, and ignored a number of articles in the New York Agreement in 1962, regarding options for self-determination for the people of West Papua. They also asked the US to close the Freeport gold mine which was considered to only take advantage of West Papua's land. (Photo by Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto)
