Caño Cristales Colombia

Cao Cristales photographed Wednesday, August 12, 2019. The river located in the Serrania de la Macarena province of Meta, Colombia and is a tributary of the Guayabero River. The river is commonly called the "River of Five Colors" or the "Liquid Rainbow," and is noted for its striking colors. The color of the river comes from a water plant called Macarenia Clavigera, an endemic aquatic species. The red plant grows and sticks to the rocks. This is what gives the water its' colorful vibrancy. Though it fluctuates subtly year to year, the best time to see the river's many colors is between June and December.
