Poland Prepares To Commemorate The 80th Of WW2 Beginning
Graves of the Soviet army soldiers fell in the 'battle for the liberation' of Krakow in 1945, seen in Krakow's Rakowicki Cemetery, a few days before the 80th anniversary of the beginning WW2. On September 1, 1939, German forces invaded Poland, then on September 17, 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east, without a formal declaration of war. The Soviet (as well as German) invasion of Poland was indirectly indicated in the 'secret additional protocol' of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed on 23 August 1939, which approximately divided Poland into 'spheres of influence' of the two powers and questioned future existence of the Polish state.
