Activists Gather Outside Supreme Court As Prorogation Appeals Begin
Activists calling for the reopening of Parliament demonstrate outside the Supreme Court in London, England, on September 17, 2019. A panel of 11 judges at the Supreme Court today began hearing arguments in two appeals of rulings over the legality of the current prorogation of Parliament. The prorogation has been ruled unlawful by the Court of Session in Edinburgh, where it was declared that prorogation had been improperly motivated by Prime Minister Boris Johnson's desire to evade MPs' scrutiny of his Brexit dealings with the EU. The High Court in London, however, ruled that the issue was not one for the courts to decide upon. The hearing is expected to last for much of the rest of the week. (Photo by David Cliff/NurPhoto)
