Climate Change Activist Group Extinction Rebellion Begin Two Weeks Of Blockades In Westminster
Members of climate change activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) block Parliament Street with a banner calling for citizens assemblies a central XR demand on the opening day of the group's long-planned 'International Rebellion' in London, England, on October 7, 2019. Group members intend to occupy 12 sites around government buildings in Westminster until at least next Saturday, October 19, aiming to 'shut down' the area to pressure lawmakers' to take further and faster action to halt biodiversity loss and bring down greenhouse gas emissions. Similar blockades by Extinction Rebellion in the city in April, at sites including Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge, saw more than 1,000 arrested a tactic promoted by XR founder Roger Hallam. Besides London, the group expect this month's 'rebellion' to involve direct action disruption by supporters in XR chapters in dozens of cities around the world. (Photo by David Cliff/NurPhoto)
