Extinction Rebellion Activists Block Bank Junction
Members of climate change activist movement Extinction Rebellion (XR) block Bank junction outside the Bank of England in the financial heart of London, England, on October 14, 2019. Today marked the start of the second consecutive week of protest actions by XR members gathered in London, more than 1,400 of whom have been arrested in the city for their avowedly non-violent disruptiveness since last Monday. Arrests are viewed as a key tactic by the group, designed to maximise publicity and disruption and so intensify pressure on political leaders to take further and faster action on climate change and biodiversity loss. Extinction Rebellion's blockade of Bank junction began early this morning, with the group declaring that it was today seeking to disrupt the work of the financial system 'bankrolling the environmental crisis'.
