Grenfell Tower In London

Grenfell Tower, destroyed by fire in June 2017, stands shrouded in sheeting in North Kensington in London, England, on December 2, 2019. Seventy-two people died in the blaze, the severity of which many local residents blamed afterwards on the impact of years of Conservative government neglect of the area and its social housing. For decades represented by Conservative Party MPs, North Kensington falls within the parliamentary constituency of Kensington, currently the most marginal in the whole of England, won off the Tories by the Labour Party and its candidate, Emma Dent Coad, by just 20 votes in the 2017 general election held just a week before the tragedy. In the upcoming December 12 election the constituency is again a key battleground, this time with the Liberal Democrats and their ex-Tory candidate Sam Gyimah also strongly in contention.
