Bulgarian Government Imposes Toll Taxes On 6 Highways
A2 Hemus highway which will connects Sofia with the Black Sea city of Varna, once it is finished. From January 2020, trucks and buses up to 12 tonnes will pay a fee of about 10 Bulgarian cents(0,05 euro cents) per kilometer for over about 10,000 km of national roads to be covered by the toll system. This was announced by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works. Toll charges for heavy goods vehicles will be based on kilometers spent on about half of Republican roads totaling 20,000 km. The movement of about 20,000 km of municipal roads remains free. The MRDPW requirement was to offer lower-than-EU-wide prices. Highways in Bulgaria are being built slowly and often substandardly, and there are just two fully completed high-speed roads, connecting Sofia to Burgas on the Black Sea and to Svilengrad on the border with Turkey and Greece. Most first-class roads are OK, but most secondary roads may be problematic. Expectations are that the revenues from the tolls will reach about BGN 1 billion annually from 2020. The ambition is to build a Hemus highway, for which the government has already allocated over BGN 1.3 billion for 134 km to the Veliko Tarnovo branch. Toll taxes will apply for: A1 Trakya highway which connects Sofia with the Black Sea city of Burgas, A2 Hemus highway which will connects Sofia with the Black Sea city of Varna, once it is finished, A3 Struma highway between Sofia and Sandanski on the Bulgarian Greek border, A4 Maritsa highway between Sofia and Svilengrad on the Bulgarian Turkish border, A5 Cherno More or Black Sea highway which will connect Varna and Burgas once it's ready and A6 Europe highway between Sofia and Serbia, it is still in progress, Sofia, Bulgaria on December 28, 2019 (Photo by Hristo Rusev/NurPhoto)
