London Train Stations Near-Deserted As Rail Services Cut Across UK
Empty chairs sit in the concourse of a near-deserted Marylebone Station in London, England, on March 23, 2020. Train services across the country began to be scaled back from today amid huge falls in passenger demand. Core services are continuing, however, primarily to allow healthcare workers, emergency services personnel and other so-called key workers to reach their workplaces. Rail franchise agreements are also to be temporarily suspended, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced today, with the government effectively nationalising the railways to protect train companies from collapsing. These emergency measures are set to remain in place for an initial period of six months. Across the UK a total of 335 patients who tested positive for the covid-19 coronavirus have now died, with the total number of positive tests this morning standing at 6,650.
