UK Department Store Chain Debenhams Filing For Administration Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

A woman walks past the boarded-up flagship branch of department store chain Debenhams on a near-deserted Oxford Street in London, England, on April 6, 2020. Debenhams announced today that it was having to file for administration as a consequence of having to shut all its stores across the UK under the covid-19 coronavirus lockdown. This is to be the second time in a year that the struggling retailer has filed for administration. Its present predicament comes not long after its permanent closure of 22 stores, resulting in more than 700 job losses, with a further 28 already slated for closure in 2021. Britain meanwhile began its third week of coronavirus lockdown today, with the measures widely expected to be extended once the initial three-week period of restrictions is up.
