Aftermath of Nepal earthquake

A woman retrieves possessions from a home damaged by the 2015 Nepal earthquake whilst volunteers clear rubble, Thalacchen Tole, Bhaktapur, Nepal. An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck Nepal shortly before midday on 25th April, 2015, bringing widespread destruction to property and the loss of over 6,000 lives (as at 29th April). Many tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the initial earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, leaving many homeless and without access to food and clean water. Rescue and aid efforts were hampered by the difficult terrain and remote locations of those affected. The UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur suffered severe damage, with many temples and shrines destroyed. UNICEF reported that over one million children had been severely affected. The 2015 earthquake was the most severe in Nepal since 1934. - Photo: Gavin Gough/NurPhoto (Photo by Gavin Gough/NurPhoto)
