The harbour is operated by Thessaloniki Port Authority OLTH and is one of the largest in the Aegean Sea, with a free port zone that functions as a major gateway for freight cargo for the Balkans and southeast Europe. The Greek Seaport has an annual traffic capacity of 16 million tonnes, the second largest container port in Greece after Piraeus and the largest in Macedonia.
