Daily Life In Mexico
A worker making amaranth skulls, he decorates them with raisins, blueberries and sweets for sale in Xochimilco, Mexico City, on the eve of Day of the Dead. Currently, the altar for this celebration is decorated with different dishes and drinks that the deceased faithful liked and with a great variety of sweets, such as the traditional calaveritas, which are made through a technique called alfeñique, a word derived from Sanskrit phañita and means sugar paste, which was introduced by the Spanish during the conquest. They can be made with amaranth or chocolate, which are curdled with honey or brown sugar and finally, they are decorated with raisins, blueberries and other sweets.
