Curio Bay Fossil Forest

Patterns in cliff face formed from petrified forest are seen at Curio Bay in Catlins, New Zealand, on November 21, 2020. Curio Bay is of international significance for its Petrified Forest dating back to the Jurassic period and tree fossils are approximately 180 million years old. Massive sheet floods of volcanic debris, perhaps triggered by heavy rain on a barren volcanic mountain, are believed to have destroyed the forest.     (Photo by Sanka Vidanagama/NurPhoto)
