Dalmatian Pelican ( Pelecanus crispus ) as seen in Evros River Delta in Greece. The birds, that are amongs the largest in the world, are seen flying in flock over the freshwater of Evros River or Meritsa, a river that marks the Greek - Turkish land borders and the delta is a protected area, Evros Delta National Park, a Natura 2000 and is protected by the European Union and the Ramsar Convention. The park is on an important migratory bird route. The nearest city to Evros Delta is Alexandroupoli, a port town, the capital of the Evros regional unit in East Macedonia and Thrace while the background hills are Turkey.
