Polish President Marks 11th Smolensk Air Tragedy Anniversary
Police are seen sealing off streets leading to Pilsudski Square where president Andrzej Duda is to attend the 11th anniversary of the Smolensk air disaster in Warsaw, Poland on April 10, 2021. President Duda commemorated the 97 casualties of the Smolensk government plance crash from April 10, 2010 in which then president Lech Kaczynski also died. The ceremony on Saturday was cut off for all but state media and the vicinity of the ceremony had been hermetically sealed by police to ward off potential protesters. An investigation led by former minister of defence Antoni Macierewicz is said to conclude the 2010 Smolensk air crash was the result of an explosion despite official investigations having concluded the result of the crash came from human error leading to collision with a tree while flying a low altitude in low visibility circumstances.
