Monument to the Heroes of Iquique at Plaza Sotomayor in Valparaiso, Chile. The Battle of Iquique consisted of two naval confrontations against Peru during the War of the Pacific in 1879. The Monumento a los Heroes de Iquique was erected at Plaza Sotomayor in 1886 in memory of the fallen Chilean sailors. On top is a statue of Arturo Prat who died while commanding the Esmeralda. In the middle are the figures of Ignacio Serrano, Ernesto Riquelme, Juan de Dios Aldea and a unknown sailor. Beneath this monument is a crypt with the remains of several war heroes.
