Piney Point Wastewater Reservoir
An aerial view of the partially drained New Gypsum Stack South wastewater reservoir at Piney Point in Palmetto, Florida Tuesday, May 4, 2021. The reservoir held about 480 million gallons of water in March and was in danger of collapsing and flooding the area. More than 200 million gallons of wastewater have been pumped into Tampa Bay with an environmental impact that is still unknown. Recently the Manatee County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution allowing a hydrogeological firm to design an underground injection well that would pump the wastewater about 3,500 feet below ground.
