Nepalese Living Goddess Kumari
Pratikcha Maharjan aged 5 years, known as the Nepalese Living Goddess Kumari attends a special program to promote respect for senior Newari women at the Hanuman Dhoka in Kathmandu, Nepal, on December 06, 2011. A Kumari is a young girl of the Shakya clan, between 4 and 7 years of age that is chosen based on 32 characteristics, horoscope and a series of tests, to house the spirit of the goddess Taleju Bhawani (an aspect of the Goddess Durga). The chosen girls remain Kumaris until they reach puberty, or shed blood. Kumari, who appears in public only thirteen times in a year on special occasions, is worshipped by both the Hindus and Buddhists as a living goddess and it is also believed that she is the protector from evil and the bestower of good luck and prosperity.
