Mortality Of Fish In India

A local pond fish that died next to the bottle of harmful local liquor in Tehatta, West Bengal, India on 02 July 2021. Studies show that the most common reason for Incidents of mass mortality of fish in India is water pollution. Industrial effluents containing heavy metals and hydrocarbons, pesticides from agriculture fields, depletion of dissolved oxygen, plastics, and sewage make their way into water bodies and harm the health of fishes. As per data shared by the National Fisheries Development Board, a total of 1518 marine fish species, 877 freshwater species and 113 brackish-water species were recorded in India in 2012. This extraordinary richness is being threatened by heavy water pollution. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)
