Battle Of The Boyne Bonfires In Larne
A person holding a Union Jack seen in front of a large bonfire during the Eleventh Night marking the start of the unionist Twelfth celebrations, in Craigy Hill, Larne. Tonight, large bonfires are lit in many Protestant loyalist neighbourhoods of Northern Ireland. Bonfires were originally lit to celebrate the Glorious Revolution (1688) and victory of Protestant king William of Orange over Catholic king James II at the Battle of the Boyne (1690), which began the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland.
