Tobacco Village In Sumedang
Woman farmers sort freshly harvested tobacco leaves on September 09, 2021 in Tobacco Village, Sumedang Regency, Indonesia. The majority of residents in this village work as tobacco farmers, a profession they have passed on from generation to generation. When visiting this village, we will see expanses of tobacco drying under the sun filling the village roads, roofs and terraces of houses. This village is able to meet market demand from all Indonesian provinces including West Java, Bali and Sumatra. Some produce is even exported abroad, to places such as Pakistan, Malaysia and Turkey. The tobacco industry in Indonesia has faced severe challenges due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and the increase of the cigarette tax excise slated for 2022.
