Kashmir Suffers As Migrant Workers Flee Valley

Labourers load trucks with Apple Boxes at Fruit mandi in Sopore, District Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, India on 20 October 2021. Traders at Fruit market sopore are worried after Non-Locals traders begin to leave the valley. Indian authorities have moved thousands of migrant workers in Kashmir to safer locations, while hundreds have fled the Kashmir valley after a wave of targeted killings. Most of the Labour and construction work in kashmir is done by the Non-Local Labourers, work at most of the construction is affected after the migrant workers left the Valley. Government estimates say about 400,000 migrant workers come to Kashmir every year, seeking work as masons, carpenters, tailors and bricklayers. Before the onset of the region’s brutal winter, most of them leave for their home states, while a few stay back. (Photo by Nasir Kachroo/NurPhoto)
