Child Labor in Ship Building Industry

Aug. 16, 2015 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - There are many shipyards located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. These yards builds and repair various small ships. It’s a source of employment for the poor people. Both children and adult workers work here under serious working condition. They hardly use any safety protection during work in process. Conditions are hot and often dangerous, all ages work together, and children grow up in a world of hard labour, missing out on formal education. According to country’s law child labor is prohibited in serious working condition but there is no implication. The current economic condition of Bangladesh is unable to solve child labor problem. It’s not possible to banned child labor completely at any time. The thing is these children’s families are in need. They don’t have any other options other than work for money and help their family. If government really going to banned child labor in the country, the situation would be worse than this. Their living of standards even go down more. So before banning child labor, government needs to develop economic condition of their family first. (Photo by Mohammad Ponir Hossain/NurPhoto)
